A CNN/SSRS poll conducted this week showed a new narrative in the 2020 Democratic primaries. Former Vice President Joe Biden and Senator Bernie Sanders remained frontrunners, but Senator Kamala Harris and former Congressman Beto O’Rourke made major jumps, scoring double-digit numbers for the first time.
“People have had more time to get to know her [Senator Harris],” political commentator Karen Finney said, “and clearly, she’s been using her time well on the ground, talking to voters and letting people get to know her and get to know what she stands for.”
Senator Harris was noted especially impressive by many, considering her number last time the poll was conducted was 4%. The Iowa Caucus being nearly eleven months away, however, experts say these numbers could all just be meaningless.
“At this point in past presidential contests, Jeb Bush was ahead, Hillary Clinton was ahead in 2007; I mean, it’s not necessarily indicative,” said Jake Tapper, “but still, if I’m in Senator Kamala Harris’ camp, I gotta feel good that she’s at least gaining on Biden and Sanders.”
