A London man has been in remission for HIV for a year and a half after receiving stem cell transplant of virus-resistant cells. He is now the second man to be cured of HIV in a decade. The first person to be cured was from Berlin. Although it is not fully cured, it is a long waited advance to researchers.
HIV used to be known as a deathly disease, but with modern medication the condition is becoming manageable.
“While it is too early to say with certainty that our patient is now cured of HIV, and doctors will continue to monitor his condition, the apparent success . . . offers hope in the search for a long-awaited cure for HIV/AIDS,” Eduardo Olavarria, a hematologist at Imperial College London, said according to the Washington Post.
