Last Friday, U.S. District Judge Gray Miller ruled that a law that required men and not women to register for the Selective Service System is unconstitutional.

While the military draft ended 45 years ago during the final stages of the Vietnam War, all American men ages 18 to 26 must register with the Selective Service System. According to USA Today, in the 1981 case of Rostker v. Goldberg, the court ruled that a male-only draft was “fully justified” because women were ineligible for combat roles. That ruling was lifted in 2015, which allowed women to have combat roles.

“If there ever was a time to discuss ‘the place of women in the Armed Services,’ that time has passed,” Miller wrote in a statement.
