Extinct or Not Extinct? That is The Question

In accordance with Ecuador’s government, researchers found an adult female Fernandina Giant Tortoise off the coast of the Galapagos Islands. Strangely enough, the animal was last seen in 1906. This is huge news for the Giant Tortoise Restoration Initiative (GTRI), as this specific tortoise is one of the 14 tortoise’s considered endangered. Most Tortoise’s have been killed over the past two centuries, both for food and for their oil.

The Galapagos were declared a national park in 1959 and a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1978.
