Junior New Jersey senator Cory Booker announced his bid for the Democratic nomination for the 2020 presidential election last Friday. The former mayor of Newark, New Jersey, has told the media he will “consider” running for president for months now, but now he has made it official.
“People in America are losing faith that this nation will work for them,” Booker said the day he made the announcement. “It’s about time we get to the hard work of building this nation to be who we want us to be — our best values, our best ideals, the best of who we are”
In his announcement video, Booker told the story of his parents, who were once denied by realtors a home in a white neighborhood simply because of their skin color. His family was able to buy that house with the help of local white lawyers inspired by the ongoing civil rights movement, he explained, and that is how any change is made — by people coming together and stepping up.
“I believe that we can build a country where no one is forgotten — no one is left behind,” Booker continued. “It is not a matter of can we, it’s a matter of do we have the collective will: the American will. I believe we do.”
Booker now joins a long list of Democrats who have either declared candidacy or expressed interest for the presidency in 2020. Once nominated, Booker will go on to face the presumptive GOP nominee President Trump in the general election.
