Catriona Gray, from the Philippines, was crowned as the winner of Miss Universe 2018 on Sunday night. She beat contestants from 93 other countries, and is the fourth Filipina to win the title of Miss Universe. According to NBC News, Gray said she wore a red dress in the competition because “when I was 13 my mom said she had a dream that I would win Miss Universe in a red dress.”
According to NBC News, the Philippines previously won Miss Universe titles in 2015, 1973 and 1969.
This year’s pageant was important because it included controversy from the U.S. contestant, Sarah Rose Summers, who mocked contestants from Cambodia and Vietnam over their language skills, and Miss Spain, Angela Ponce, being the first transgender woman to compete in a Miss Universe pageant.
Second place went to Tamaryn Green of South Africa and third place to Sthefany Gutierrez of Venezuela.
