At 7am Monday morning, a fairly normal school in North Carolina turned into a scene of a horrific crime as a male student was shot down by his armed peer. The victim was rushed to Carolinas Medical Center Main where he later died of his injuries.
“We are incredibly saddened that we had a loss of life on one of our campuses today,” said school Superintendent Clayton Wilcox in a statement to the press. “Our hearts go out to the larger community and to all the young people who witnessed this tragedy.”
As for the shooter, the student was taken into custody shortly after the incident by Matthews Police Department. In a statement on Facebook, the department stated that the shooting was believed to be an isolated incident and that the scene is currently being secured by the police.
The shooting itself lends to the bigger argument about gun control and how it should be mandated. While an armed resource officer was said to be present in the school, they were only able to take action after the victim was injured rather than prevent the shooting altogether.
