In a new motion to support the development of positive relationships and responsible decision making, the LCPS Department of Pupil Services is offering voluntary support groups to high school students. At Champe, this comes in the form of the optional counseling groups students were offered at the beginning of the year.
“The focus is to make sure that the student is as successful as they can be,” school social worker Jennifer McLemore said. “[These sessions] are just to ensure the students have something here beyond what the school can offer.”
The sessions themselves include an initial one-on-one interview, participation in small group counseling, individual counseling, and periodic follow-ups.
Of course, this doesn’t make these services equivalent to professional therapy. These sessions are academic in nature, and simply a way to enforce and reinforce social skills in high school students. If additional help is needed, students will be referred to outside sources.
For more information about the counseling groups, be sure to talk to Ms. McLemore in the counseling department.
