One year ago today, fifty- eight people were killed at the Route 91 Harvest Festival in Las Vegas. It is considered one of the deadliest mass shootings in history.

There was an early morning event to honor the victims at an amphitheater in downtown Las Vegas; Nevada governor Brian Sandoval and Las Vegas Metro Police Sheriff Joe Lombardo spoke at the event. Mynda Smith, a sister of one of the victims, also spoke to honor her sister and the victims.

“ ‘Today, I stand here with so much pride for our city and our country,'” Smith said in her speech (according to USA Today).  “‘I have learned and watched firsthand the meaning of being Vegas strong.’ ”

At 10:01 pm tonight, the Las Vegas strip will go dark to remember the victims.
