It’s only September, and so far, Washington D.C.’s homicide total is exceeding last years, for the entire year. As of Tuesday, the homicide count was at 118; there were 116 total homicides in 2017.

Over the weekend, fourteen people were shot and two people were stabbed. The police believe that these are unconnected crime sprees. These new crimes are what tipped the homicide rate to exceed last years.

A report issued by the Brennan Center for Justice showed that all crimes in D.C. decreased this summer, except for carjackings and theft from cars, which increased by two and seven percent from last year. D.C.’s mayor, Muriel Bowser, blamed the increase of homicides on Regis Bryant, D.C.’s regional police commander. However, she removed him in June over protests from the police union.
