Crazy Rich Asians is Rewriting the Asian Narrative

With over $110 million dollars made in the box office after only running for 3 weeks, Crazy Rich Asians has shattered box office records both domestically and internationally. Of course, this success is nothing compared to the cultural barriers it has broken as the first hollywood movie with an all-asian cast in 20 years.

“It’s really great that there’s so much more diversity on the screen,” says sophomore Valentina Morgan. “Like, with To All the Boys I’ve loved before, there was an asian lead which never happens, especially in a rom-com where they aren’t stereotyped and portrayed as nerds.”

Of course, the movie only portrays one facet of the asian ethnicities. The hope of many is that Hollywood will start representing other Asian countries and cultures as well.

“It’s great that there’s finally representation,” says Morgan. “it’s a good start, but it’s still not enough.”
