Most Underrated Players for Every Position (NFL)

Today we are going to dive into the list of what I believe to be the most underrated players in the National Football League. This list will consist of all players (Not including Kicker, Punter, Offensive Linemen, or Kick/Punt Returners).

Quarterback: Marcus Mariota, Tennessee Titans

Mariota has shown a lot of flashy plays throughout his career. He utilizes a lot of mobility in his game which opens up the playbook for the offense and plays as a dual threat against the defense. Some may look at the stat sheet and see how Mariota threw more interceptions than he did touchdowns. However, he did lead the Titans to a playoff comeback against the Chiefs as he is on the rise to prove the doubters wrong.

Running Back: Jordan Howard, Chicago Bears

This was an easy choice for me especially because I am a Bears fan. Without even starting the first 3 games of his rookie year, Howard racked up 1313 rushing yards on a 3-13 Bears team with a shaken up offensive line. Per averages, Howard averaged 101 yards per game. If he started the first 3 games (according to these stats), he would beat Ezekiel Elliot for the most rushing yards in the 2016-2017 season. In addition to this, Howard was snubbed this year for the Pro Bowl.

Wide Receiver: Marvin Jones Jr., Detroit Lions

Jones had a breakout year in 2017 with an outstanding bond with veteran quarterback Matthew Stafford. His lateral quickness and vertical abilities helped the Lions’ offense a lot.

Tight End: Delanie Walker, Tennessee Titans

Walker was one of the tight ends whose name has been around for a while. He doesn’t get any recognition for being the number one target for developing quarterback Marcus Mariota.

Nose Tackle: Damon Harrison, New York Giants

Harrison is by far the best run stuffer in the league. He racks up a lot of tackles and pressures for the Giants and counters running backs with ease. He was one of the biggest Pro Bowl snubs in the 2017-2018 season.

Defensive End: Dante Fowler Jr., Jacksonville Jaguars

A former first rounder in 2015, Fowler was exceptional in the year of ‘Sacksonville’ racking up 8 sacks while staying healthy once again and playing all 16 games.

Linebacker: Chandler Jones, Arizona Cardinals

Who led the league in sacks? Surely it was Everson Griffen, or Cam Jordan, or Demarcus Lawrence. Wait no, it had to be Calais Campbell right? Although many would believe that these players would be the sack leaders, Chandler Jones lead the pack racking up 17 total sacks. The Cardinals defense was overlooked a lot this year, especially since they have a lot of veterans with an 8-8 record. Jones was the backbone of the team’s defense.

Safety: Adrian Amos, Chicago Bears

Amos was exceptionally well last season. He finished as the number 2 ranked safety per Pro Football Focus. Although he wasn’t a flashy player, he didn’t make many mistakes for the Bears defense, secretly landing them a top-10 spot in defense last season.

Cornerback: Casey Hayward, Los Angeles Chargers

Hayward has played all 16 games for the 4th straight year. He has helped stabilize the Chargers’ secondary with his Pro-Bowl caliber defensive plays. Although he only racked up 4 interceptions, he locked up a lot of star receivers this season.
