What is AI?

Artificial Intelligence is all around us. You may not even realize how frequently you interact with Artificial intelligence. While Artificial Intelligence comes in many different forms, Generative AI has made headlines in recent months. Generative AI tools like ChatGPT allow people to use natural language to interact with a computer. The computer is able to respond in ways that might look and feel a lot like how a human might respond.

Types of AI

There are many different types of AI tools that you may interact with on a day-to-day basis. Most AI tools that you might hear about or use are forms of Machine Learning, or its subset Deep Learning. Machine Learning describes the ability for machines to adapt and develop their own algorithms to solve complex problems.  Deep Learning is the next step in Machine Learning, where computers are trained to process information in ways that are similar to the human brain.

Generative AI tools are examples of Deep Learning. ChatGPT is probably the most talked-about Generative AI tool, but other examples include OpenAI’s DALL-E, Google’s Bard, and Microsoft’s Bing Chat.

What can AI do?

Artificial Intelligence is the ability for computers to do things that mimic human capabilities.

Generative AI is a subset of AI that teaches computers how to analyze data to produce original responses. ChatGPT and other natural language interfaces are a subset of Generative AI, and they focus on teaching computers how to respond to questions and prompts in a human-like way. To generate these responses, the computers are trained on vast amounts of data. The computer draws from that data to generate responses to questions and engage in human-like conversations.

Generative AI tools can also produce original works that go beyond simple text. Some Generative AI tools can produce original images or artwork, or write original computer code.
