Rhodesian Ridgebacks!

Today we have one of my personal favorite dog breeds. Ranked at 42nd most popular dog breed in North America by the AKC we have the Rhodesian Ridgebacks. RRs are medium to large sized dogs with lots of personality. The have a good level of energy, not too much and not too little. These dogs were bred to be muscular and intimidating so that they could be used as hunter dogs in Africa and as protectors! Despite this, they have hearts of gold, and respond well to training. They are fit and athletic dogs, loving a good romp in their puppy years but will quickly mellow out as they get older.

RR’s are considered a “Low-Shedding” breed, meaning they shed occasionally and not nearly as much as other types of short-haired breeds. They can come in about 9 colors, and RRs bred with other dogs will maintain the RR structure with different fascinating color patterns. For the most part, RRs are not prone to health issues as long as they maintain good nutrition and get a good amount of exercise. Interestingly, their ridge that runs down the length of their spine is a genetic defect, causing the hair to run in the opposite direction. This means that not all RRs will have this specific trait.

Even tempered, quiet, affectionate, and good with children, this breed is a great family dog with some solid muscle. Train and treat them well, and they will surely be best friends for life! Find out more at https://rrcus.org/
