Ileitas oi Staik
By: Alexis Cortes Negron, Grade 9
Sea Salt,
I can taste it
As I tread along
The shores.
Crashing waves
Seducing me to return
To a place I long for.
Sea Salt,
It’s in the air;
How it gazes
Up the spiral staircase.
Cyan windows,
It matches the sea,
Reminding me where
I could be.
Lost voices
Find their way here,
Shipwrecked
And desperate.
Sea Salt,
It’s in our blood,
Smiling as we walk forward,
But keeping a straight face
When we look back,
Even for a glimpse.
A place for peace.
How the stars
Shine in the night sky.
Ileitas oi Staik,
“The Lighthouse of Stars:”
Bittersweet hope
Continues here.
A reminder
Of a tragedy,
Of a period
Of great injustice.
How I long
To go back.
Sea Salt,
It comforts us.
It’s a tale to move on,
A tale to let go.
