bad news

bad news

Words by: Nanaki Preet Bawa, 10

Too many bad things are happening,
I can’t even focus on one.
No matter what, the world seems to be blackening
At the hands of the handgun.
When one mass shooting transpires,
there is a moment of relief,
that the next one will be a while.
it’s on CNN for one day before it’s replaced by another.
The next day,
the headline that announces the recent records of vaccine administration
Is replaced by the FedEx shooting, which killed people that looked like me
The next day,
The headline that announces a couple’s separation because of COVID.
One on earth, the other not,
Is replaced by a Texas shooting of three, three
miles from my friend’s house.
When were the days where bad news was a rarity?
Now it seems like every day is bad news.

  1. I can relate to this piece so much! I actually gave up on following the news for a few months during the pandemic because I was overwhelmed by all the death toll and spread of covid. Even now, I constantly feel like nothing good has come out of the past year for us.

Although though this poem was short, it was very impactful. I can’t wait to hear more pieces from you next year!

  2. I loved this poem! I also relate to this, it’s one of the reasons I stopped paying attention to the news since it was so depressing and stressful. Great work!
