SCA Plans Independence High School’s First Homecoming Dance

On Saturday, Nov. 9, Independence High School hosted their inaugural homecoming dance in the main gym. The Student Council Association (SCA) had planned the homecoming dance for the students of Independence. For sophomore Alinah Fawad,10, putting in work for the dance was the number one priority. “Homecoming was important to the SCA because it was our first homecoming and gathering as a new school,” said Fawad. “It was something all of us could go to and see our new, fellow family members because being part of Indy means that you are surrounded by all different types of students and teachers. And that brings us closer as a family. It shows that we all have a lot of respect and love for each other.”

SCA worked hard for weeks to make the dance enjoyable for the students. “The effort that was put into the dance was different for each person,” said Fawad. “The SCA was making sure that everything was running smoothly and that there were no problems throughout the dance. We had to come at 8 a.m. to make sure that the decorations were on point.”

Everyone in SCA decided to put their ideas down to choose the theme for the dance. “During the summertime, SCA had a meeting, and we were actually browsing through ideas for homecoming. Then we finalized the theme of We Got the Beat. Freshman had country, sophomores had rock and roll and juniors had disco. It was a wide range of music,” explained Fawad.

The SCA wanted to choose music that the students would enjoy dancing to while keeping it school-appropriate. “For the actual homecoming dance, we had modern-day music and chose songs that high schoolers would listen to,” Fawad said. “We had early 2000 music and 2010 music.” Everyone that contributed to the dance wanted the students of Independence to feel comfortable and have fun.  Fawad explained that some students wished that the music selection was better.

Overall, the SCA was pleased with the outcome of the dance. To ensure the dance is even better next year, they took students’ suggestions during lunch about what to change for next year’s homecoming dance.
