Poetry Unit

Something new that I have learned from this Poetry Unit is a lot more elements that go into writing poetry and I’ve just learned more into depth about those elements. Skills that I found myself practicing are coming up with words that rhyme well with others and expanding vocabulary in general. Some advice that I’d give to someone who wants to start poetry, is that to have paitence with yourself. It might become a bit frustrating at times when you may find yourself at a stump in the road and don’t know how to continue the poem.

My TedX Talk

I recently made a TedX Talk titled “Just Seek Help”. My process for writing this Ted Talk was to spread awarness and motivate people towards Mental Health Issues. When we first started this unit, I almost immediatly knew what my topic was, because I know a bunch of people who have Mental Health Issues but a lot of the time are too afraid to seek help. My whole process was pretty simple, I just put together a bunch of pictures, statistics, and my own personal experiences with this topic.

My Signature Color

The color above is what I consider my signature color! The name of my color is called Taupe Grey, specifically in the shade above. In reality I dont really have a favorite or signature color, but I really enjoy more nuetral and minimalistic colors such as this one. After researching the color, I found out that this color is considered a more luxurious color and represents balance, relaxation, and modernism. Many people say that seeing the color Taupe gives them a sense of security.

How I decided on this color was because, again I enjoy nuetral and minimalistic colors like black, white, and grey. When I was scrolling on the Canva Color Generator I came across this color and felt drawn to it. As you could probably tell, Id go for a more grey shade of Taupe rather than a more brown shade. The word Taupe comes from the French noun taupe, meaning “mole”. The name originally referred to the usual color of a French mole. Around the 1940’s the color expanded to a much more wide variety of shades. The exact hex code for this shade of Taupe is #E9E6E2. I feel like this is “my” color because It represents my mood a lot of the time which is a more calming one.

Chinese New Year

The festivities of Chinese New Year dont actually start on an offical day each year, instead the day that it starts is actually based on the Lunar Calendar. The holiday usually begins on when there is a new moon after the winter solstice (About December 21st). The dates usually range between 21st of January to the 20th of February. No one actually knows the exact day when Chinese New Year was created, but many people speculate that it originated in the Shang Dynasty (1046 – 1600 BC), when people held ceremonies in honor of our ancestors and gods at the end or beginning of each year.

The origins of Chinese New Year also are steeped in legends. One legend is that thousands of years ago there was a monster called “Nian”, as you can see from the picture below. The legend goes that on the day of Chinese New Year the Nian would come out of its hiding place (In the sea or on the mountains) and feed on humans and animals. Today, the Nian is the dragon in the Chinese New Year festivals dragon dance. The main color In Chinese New Year is Red, because its the color that scares of the Nian, preventing it from feasting on people and animals.

Continuing on with the festivity traditions, the day is filled with many thrilling activities! The kids would go out and play with other kids in the neighborhood and later on would typically go to a festival. Throughout the day everyone would wear a traditional Chinese Outfit called “Hanfu”. The Chinese New Year festival includes many activities such as watching the dragon dance, making kites, and decorating your very own lanterns. The festival site is usually filled with many stalls and bright colors. Annually a few days before Chinese New Year begins, people would go out to places called flower stalls to buy a wide range of flowers to decorate their houses with. Many popular flowers include Orchids, Peach Blossoms, Lotus Flowers, and Chrysanthemums. Later that day, families would get together and sometimes have a huge party in honor of welcoming the New Year, hoping to bring good wealth, happiness, and health to everyone. Traditionally, the kids would give their elders mandarin oranges, in exchange for red envelopes that have money in them. At night is usually when the fireworks show begins! Everyone would gather outside in a specific place where the fireworks begin and watch along with their families, but of course firework shows are held all over China! Some kids would come to the festivals with colorful sparklers to play with (Under Supervision of course). The fireworks show is usually includes many colorful fireworks that can last for hours on end!

Me and my families tradition for Chinese New Year is usually to go out and buy some new clothes, watch a live Chinese New Year livestream from China, since we cant be there in person most years, and have a big feast with family. We would usually eat hot pot, thats filled with many varieties of food, and my parents would have King Crab, with some wine.

This blog post is meaningful to me because it tells the tradition of a holiday thats quite important in my family. Here is a few fun ways to celebrate the new year with the following link! https://www.washingtonian.com/2022/01/20/10-fun-ways-to-celebrate-lunar-new-year/.

All About Abigail

1 – Fun fact, I actually have a scar on my knee that I’ve had for about a year now. There’s pretty much a silly story that goes along with how I got it. One day, I was visiting my cousin’s house, and we went to take their dog on a walk. He is a MASSIVE goldendoodle named Happy, and I have no clue why they named him that. Anyways, during the walk he was being crazy and his leash accidentally scraped my knee. It’s left a mark ever since.

2 – Speaking of dogs, In my whole family we have 3 dogs in total! I have two and my cousins have one that I just talked about. In my house I have a Golden Retriever, named Boston, and a Shih Tzu, named Aspen, they’re both the complete opposites of each other! Boston is more of an energetic and SUPER playful dog, while Aspen is more of a laid-back and chill dog, though of course he also has his playful moments.

3 – Here is another fun fact about me! I was born and raised here in Virginia, but I’m originally from China. All of my family were born in China, and know how to speak Mandarin very fluently, but on the other hand my cousins and I only know how to speak a little bit of the language. The last time I visited my home town was when I was about 3 years old, so of course I don’t really remember anything of what it really looked like.

4 – Circling back to the pets topic, I’ve had many pets throughout my life, so you could say that I’m kinda an expert. I had a turtle and some fish when I was around the age of 5 years old. Just recently, my two parakeets named King and Chip unfortunately passed away. Now, that leaves me with just my two dogs that I’ve mentioned before. About my fish, I had this one large gray fish that started to eat the small goldfish and soon all my goldfish got eaten.

5 – My all time favorite food is Pho! There are many reasons why I’d pick Pho over any other food. First of all, It’s really flavorful and you can add so many different ingredients to it. For me personally, It brings back many of my childhood memories, such as when my parents would always take me to this one pho place for lunch and I would ALWAYS be super excited to go.

6 – Another fact that I have about myself is that I have a fear of the ocean. I wouldn’t say that I have a fear of the ocean itself but, instead I have a fear of what’s IN the ocean. Everytime I’d really think about the idea in general It makes me slightly uneasy. Although, I wouldn’t say that I’m deathly afraid of it. You may catch me boating from time to time on a river but I would NEVER ride a boat across the ocean!

7 – If I could live anywhere in the world I’d probably live in Canada. Of course there’s some pros and cons to Canada, such as cold temperatures which I’m not 100% too fond about BUT I’d always prefer it over extremely hot temperatures. I think the nature in Canada is very beautiful and that’s one of the main reasons why I’d want to visit and maybe live there one day. There’s many sights that I’d like to see such as Niagara Falls, Moraine Lake, and Jasper National Park!

8 – One kinda weird thing about me is that I don’t have a favorite singer or song. It’s a little weird since I always listen to music. There are some songs I listen to more than others of course but I don’t necessarily have a favorite one!

9 – My all time favorite subject In school would be History! Ever since 6th grade I’ve always found History to be a very interesting subject and there’s so much to learn about it. This year History has now shifted into Civics which I’m also looking forward to learning more about. One of the main reasons why this is my favorite subject is because we get to learn and discover about what happened long ago, and how countries have changed over time! I recall how I’d always enjoy listening to stories about the past from my former teachers.

10 – Lastly, my final fact is that I LOVE action movies! The thrill of watching and action based movies just gets me on the edge of my seat every time. A few of my favorites are Marvel, DC, or just animated action movies. Anything with a good plot and is thrilling will usually catch my attention pretty quickly! My parents are also pretty big fans of Superhero movies. I remember that when I was younger me and my parents would always have a BUNCH of movie nights where we’d go late into the night and watch action movies.
