March 1866 a battle was fought in this vicinity between the Shoshone-Bannock and the Crow Indians over hunting grounds in the Wind River basin. Victorious Shoshone Chief Wahsakie displayed a Crow Indian’s heart on his lance at the war dance after battle.

The Shoshone(also spelled Shoshoni) are a Native American tribe with three large divisions: the Northern, the Western and the Eastern. The Northern are concentrated in eastern Idaho, western Wyoming, and north-eastern Utah. The Eastern lived in Wyoming, northern Colorado and Montana. In the past, the Shoshone people lived in the Rocky Mountains. They lived in Wyoming, Montana, Utah, Nevada, Oregon and Central and Southern Idaho.  The Snake Nation is known When the Shoshone people and the Bannock people  are neighbors. The Shoshone people lived in different groups. In the west they hunted rabbits, birds, and fish but also lived in roofless grass huts. In the north and east, people lived in tepees, rode horses, and hunted buffalo. Northern Shoshone people such as the group Lemhi, once lived on the plains in Montana, but rivals Blackfeet, Hidatsa, and other groups drove them to the Mountains. The Northern Shoshone moved in search of food. Chief Washakie was a Shoshone warrior. Chief Washakie asked for schools, churches, and hospital to be built for the Shoshone people. He also asked for a reservation in the Wind River Valley, which was originally given to the crow (Another group). When the first settlers came he didn’t like them, though he did think that they should help each other. The US government agreed to give the land. In 1868, the got the piece of land. Chief

Washakie died in 1900 he was buried in Fort Washakie . Today, many people participate in honoring the culture in the past.  At the Wind River Reservation powwows are held. They sing, dance, talk together, and many more. This celebration is one of the most popular Native American celebration. The Wind River Reservation  is the only place or reservation  to choose where they want to live.
