In around 1940 a carpenter named James Marshall made an amazing discovery that changed the region. It all happened when he was building a mill for a businessman named John Shutter. One day while James Marshall was working on the mill he made a discovery of a life time, he found gold! But at first it wasn’t made public news. Sutter tried keeping the gold a secret, but after weeks or months the word got out. After word got out a lot of people hurried to California to look for gold. Newspaper were lying about how easy it would be to get the gold, but it was very hard. Many miners went to an area they called “the mother lode”. It is located near the Sierra Nevada Mountains. Because so many people were hungry for gold  After the gold rush was over many towns near the area were deserted. But one town that wasn’t left a ghost town was San Francisco. Actually after the gold rush was over the city attracted a lot of newcomers. Because of this they had a bigger population and a bigger economy. In Hawaii early settlers raised pigs for meat and crops such as bananas, and coconuts to be sold and eaten.
