Over the past month, I have been working on this portrait for my friend. Being a musician, he inspired me to take on this task of creating an album cover for him, if he ever decided to publish music in the future. However, I was very hesitant when it came to the watercolor pencil background. Having been limited to only acrylic paint this school year, watercolor seemed very intimidating since its qualities are almost the complete opposite to those of acrylic, yet despite my concerns, the waves turned out a lot better than I expected.
Planning 9.0
For my next piece, I am going to attempt my first self-portrait. I wanted to incorporate features that had a subtle significance, yet were also more personal, and represent my style better.
First of all, my favorite color is a bright red, like the lightest of the three shades I used in this spread. It is also a lucky color in Chinese culture. This being meaningful on many different levels, I wanted to make this color the main focus of this piece, so I decided to leave the rest of the portrait in grayscale.
Through this, I aim to represent the Chinese dragon, which also brings luck and good fortune. The outer appearance of the Chinese dragon can be interpreted as dangerous and mysterious, as represented by the simple choice of black and white, while the red symbolizes the deeper significance of the dragon’s strength, courage, and loyalty. By purposefully making the hat and nail polish red, this portrait can signify how I “wear” these traits, and how I am often misunderstood, like the dragon. Nevertheless, those good characteristics still shine through and make an even greater impact.
Final Piece #6
He’s done! I honestly had a harder time with these orange tones compared to the purple in piece #4. I also had an additional challenge with the clothing, since #4 had a solid dark indigo color for the shirt. However, I think the clothing in this portrait really makes him stand out more and compliments his pose well.

Final Piece: Drawing & Painting
Daily Dose of Inspiration
At this point, I think I am comfortable enough with regular portraits to move forward and experiment more this quarter. After my portfolio review, I think I will accept this challenge of creating more dynamic pieces by changing my composition and perspective to make these paintings more unique and stylized.
