Before I had started this project I had decided that I wanted to move towards a more illustrative/playful direction, something I feel I usually tend to stray from.. I wanted to push myself to try something new and along the way I was aiming to get more comfortable with digital drawing. My overall idea was kind of inspired by the 90s and cartoons.
I feel as though the idea of the 90s is communicated by the clothing my subject is wearing. And I believe the “loose/cartoonish” idea is conveyed through the use of thick black lines as use of shading.
The only issue I really ran into was through the Procreate app. Due to the size of the piece, the maximum amount of layers I could have was 8, which caused me to really refine all my details on one section before moving onto the next. Essentially, it really restricted how freely I could work through my piece.
I’m really proud of the piece overall, because it strays far from the kind of things I usually do in my artwork. I enjoyed working looser and I think it paid off in the end.
I think I could do more to make the background more interesting, but I am also scared of making it too distracting.
While making this artwork, I learned how to work looser but still keep in touch with the side of me that favors small details. I think can take away how to use thick black lines to my advantage. As it’s something I’ve always previously avoided in the past because I was scared of my work getting too dark.
