Reflections

Artwork #2 – Reflection

Below is my final piece for my second artwork. Overall, I’m really happy with the outcome. By creating this piece I really wanted to showcase the classic idea of “falling down the rabbit hole”. The top half is in black and white to represent the human world. The colored half of the piece is meant to represent Wonderland. The ring connecting to the halves is colored but at a lower opacity to show the transition between worlds. The reasoning for why Alice is colored in grayscale is to represent that she is from the human world and to show how much she stands out against the color. This also represents how much Alice stands out in Wonderland in general.

The original idea behind my use of color was to represent the different world that Alice is falling into. I definitely feel like the use of color correctly emphasizes the “crazy” that is Wonderland.  I do think my work accurately represents my original idea well. Before finishing this piece, I did have the idea of adding in more Alice’s in the process of falling above the one picture on my piece. After finishing the piece, I decided that adding in any more would make the piece too busy, especially considering the bright use of color.

The biggest issue I ran into was definitely time. When I had decided to draw this piece digitally, a part of me thought the line work would be quicker. As I moved along with my piece I realized that I was wrong and no matter the format line work is still line work and will always take forever. Another issue I ran into was dropping in colors for the Wonderland half. I had set aside different palettes to use, so I could make patterns using colors. As I began dropping in colors it was difficult deciding on the placement of colors because I didn’t want any of the color schemes to touch themselves, if that makes any sense at all.

I’m really just proud of this piece in general, mainly because of its use in color. I’ve never really been one to be fond of bright colors. Rather I’ve always been someone who takes a liking to black and white because I like to work with pens.

Timing is a big thing for me. My time management really sucks and that’s something I want to push to fix in the future. I think throughout this piece I really enjoyed working digitally and getting more comfortable with drawing on a screen without using a photo like I did last year for my “drip” pieces . I would like to push more digital pieces in the future.
