Eggplant

🍆

I possess a very peculiar plant, however I understand it on levels that others would judge me for. It symbolizes youth, the importance of childhood, and other formative factors that leads to optimal growth. The plant can be taken in differently from alternate perspectives. Though not nearly grown, the stem is of normal size; though as that of a fully nourished plant. It represents youth in a sense that the formative stage of growth is beautiful. Every small detail, representing an aspect of youth. Precious and fragile, yet growing into such a luscious organism filled with nutrients, ready to nourish that of which chooses to consume.

The plant speaks to me, in a way in which I cannot hear; only absorb. My eyesight rests upon such a small though biologically advanced organism. The specimen reminds me of someone I know. Someone who while smaller, packs a lot of intellect. Someone who while younger, holds more heart and meaning. Someone who while common, encases much more significance than meets the eye. Significant in a way that can only be proven by growth. That person is me.

  1. I find it interesting that an eggplant can speak to you in a specific way. Good job symbolizing the eggplant and referring it to how it speaks to you by saying it represents youth and childhood.

    • Thank you, Cassidy. I said this because an eggplant, like a human being, is a living organism with complex biological components. If I can think, so can the plant. If I can feel, so can the plant.

  2. Kyle, your comment to Cassidy reminds me of what I’ve been learning about indigenous peoples’ relationship to plants and animals. Many of these peoples see plants and animals as peoples, much as they would see other nations of people. Here’s one of my favorite lines from your piece: “Though not nearly grown, the stem is of normal size; though as that of a fully nourished plant.” That’s getting specific. I enjoy your writing.
