Reflecting Back on Artwork #3

For my third piece of the first quarter, I decided to focus on trypophobia (the fear of holes or round patterns). Originally I had planned to have my composition consist of a female figure with her tongue sticking out with a hole pattern on her tongue. I then decided that I wanted to further abstract my piece, so I changed my composition to be a more abstract version of tentacles. I also chose to do this piece in acrylic because I wanted there to be a smooth gradient between the red and black and I wanted to build on the texture. I had trouble figuring out how to represent the circular pattern. At first, I tried bubble wrap, but that didn’t really work and then I used the back of my paint brush. I was able to end up with a cool “hole” like texture. In terms of my weakest areas, I feel like I could have made some of the holes bigger and more defined. However, I feel like this piece conveys the sense of fear I was going for. Through the creation of this piece, I was able to learn new approaches to patterns and textures. I was also able to really play with acrylic and I really enjoyed that aspect of the process.
