Reflecting Back on Artwork #2

My second piece was centered around chromophobia or the fear of color. I chose to do this phobia because of the irony it has in art. This piece was done with a palette knife and acrylic paint because I really wanted to delve further into abstractness and focus mainly on paint application. I really like it because even though it is simplistic, I did try to be mindful of my placement, texture, and application of the colors. I decided in order to unify my sustained inquiry pieces and to add a sense of fear I would try to incorporate a sense of “closing in” in my pieces. I executed this by having the black fade into the colors and I tried to make it appear jagged. Originally, I was going to have some sort of figure fading in the center of the piece as well, but I decided that that would have been too much and detract from the overall composition. I think my weakest area of this artwork would be the overall “message” of the piece. Although I have the black on closing in I wish it evoked more fear. The biggest thing I gained from this experience was how to remain loose with painting and I found it really fun to have such a free will with the paint and texture.

  1. I think that this is a really cool piece! I love the shadow of black around the colors; it definitely helps to tie in the theme of fears. I also think that the use of the palette knife created an interesting sense of texture which I really enjoy. Overall, even though the piece is very simple, I like it!
