Zendaya Makes History with Emmy Win Sunday Night

Sunday night, at the 72nd Emmy Awards, Zendaya took home the award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series for her role as Rue in HBO’s Euphoria. This win marked history, because Zendaya is now the youngest actress to win in this category at age 24, and the second black woman to win as well. Zendaya beat out the competitors Jennifer Aniston, Olivia Colman, Sandra Oh, and Laura Linney, which was a shock to many, considering how much older and experienced they are compared to her.

HBO’s hit show Euphoria centers around teens navigating life and their identities, which is an important topic of today. In her acceptance speech, Zendaya made sure to express her support for people across the country by saying, “I just want to say that there is hope in the young people out there…And I just want to say to all our peers out there doing the work in the streets: I see you, I admire you, I thank you.”
