Having killed 17 and infected hundreds, the Wuhan coronavirus has been confirmed in the US state of Washington. Coronavirus is essentially a group of viruses that, though animal in origin, can transfer to humans. There were previously two known types: Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) and Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS). The former is less deadly, causing feverish symptoms and causes respiratory problems while the latter causes fatigue, respiratory distress, and kidney failure. The Wuhan coronavirus is thought to be milder than both MERS and SARS and much more slow acting. Finally, the Wuhan coronavirus has only been observed in adults thus far, with the median age being individuals in their 40’s. While scientists are attempting to formulate a vaccine, the present newness of the virus is posing a light challenge.
“The lesson we’ve learned is coronavirus infections are serious and one of the newest and biggest global health threats,” researcher Dr. Peter Hotez at the University of Texas said to CNN news.
