With the threat (or anticipation) of snow upon us, I am reminded of a book I read a few years ago that is the perfect read for a snowy day, Greenglass House by Kate Milford. There’s something timeless and atmospheric about the story that makes it a perfect wintery read!
Milo and his parents run an inn, but there are never travelers over winter break, so they get to have a bit of a vacation around Christmas. Except this year, first one, then two, then more travelers arrive in the midst of a snow storm. Who are they? Why have they all shown up at the inn now, a traditionally slow time of year? Why do they each seem secretive and mysterious in their own ways? And most of all, what do they want with Greenglass House? Part mystery, part something else. If you’re a fan of Lemony Snicket, The Mysterious Benedict Society, or Escape from Mr. Lemoncello’s Library, you might enjoy this book.
Here’s a book trailer for it that I found:
You can read the Google Books sample to get a taste of the story for yourself by clicking on the book’s cover.
If you’re interested in reading the whole book, you can check it out two ways:
MackinVIA eBook – remember to use Farmwell Station Middle School as the school name, your student ID number as the user ID and your regular password
I haven’t read any of the sequels yet, but there are several more books connected to Greenglass House! If you read the first and enjoy it, here are the other books in the series:
We’ve got some more of the 6th graders’ favorite book trailers for you today. Rick Riordan is clearly popular! Today we’ve got two different Lightning Thief book trailers and one for House of Hades.
Marissa Meyer is also popular. We’ve got one trailer for Cinder and one for Winter, both parts of her Lunar Chronicles series.
The links provided go to either MackinVIA if we have the book in Farmwell’s digital collection, or to one of the public library’s digital resources. To access the public library’s digital resources you must have a public library card number.
The 6th graders finished up the school year learning about and creating book trailers in their English language arts classes. The students then watched them and voted on their favorites. Here are just a few of the winning book trailers voted on by our 6th grade students. I will be posting more over the next couple days.
Links go to either MackinVIA if we have a digital copy of the book, or to a copy in the public library’s digital collection if we don’t. To access eBooks and digital audiobooks from the public library, you must have a public library card number to log in.
May is Asian/Pacific American Heritage Month! As the official website for Asian/Pacific American Heritage Month states, it is a month to pay “tribute to the generations of Asian and Pacific Islanders who have enriched America’s history and are instrumental in its future success”.
Today I am highlighting some books you can read to celebrate. Click on any of the books in the picture below and it will take you to where you can read a short summary of that book and check it out. Some of the links go to MackinVIA, some go to Hoopla Digital, and some go to Overdrive. You will need a public library card to access the books in Hoopla Digital and Overdrive.
Since the book covers in the top image are small, you may find them hard to read. Here is a full list of the titles featured in the top picture in no particular order:
Links are provided so you may get more information about the books. Although recommendations can be great tools to use when deciding what you want to read, as always use your own best judgement about whether a book is good fit for you. Happy Friday! I am so grateful that I have my friends and family to keep my spirits up. They are available via text, video chat, or phone call almost anytime! When it’s nice out, my daughter comes over and we get to sit outside (6 feet apart). Hopefully, you have people in your life that you can contact when you need a bit of socialization. Thankfully, technology has allowed us to be physically distant, but still stay in contact. Don’t forget about your friends or family members that live far away. It’s easy to send a quick text or phone call. I hope everyone is staying physically distant, but keeping social. Reach out to your friends and family when you are feeling down or really, just anytime. The books today revolve around families. Hope you enjoy them!

Day 4 of what is getting me through quarantine is my number #2 thing, books! Thank goodness for books, I can escape anytime I want through the pages of adventure, fantasy, or mystery, even to outer space. Of course this can also go back to my first entry of technology. Thanks to ebooks, I can access a variety of books through MackinVia and the Loudoun County Public Library‘s Overdrive, Hoopla, and Libby for free! Hopefully, you are enjoying reading for pleasure and not just because it’s required. If you need a recommendation, don’t forget you can still email your librarians. We are always happy to help you find the just right book.
