Final Thoughts
It’s my hope that this gives the reader a sense of all that’s involved in a Battle of the Books competition. There’s a good deal of “behind-the-scenes” hard work, but the payoff is huge! Engaging our teens in the act of reading is the ultimate goal, and the Battle accomplishes this entirely.
As I’ve said, it can’t happen without the efforts of the many people involved in the Battle. A sincere thanks goes out to all of them! Already I look forward to next year’s Battle, wondering how many more students and adults we’ll reach.
Having observed the Battle participants over the past four years, I’ve come to the conclusion that this is an event that is necessary and needed. There is no other type of event that celebrates the love and joy of reading, just for the pleasure of it. Beyond the opportunity to read contemporary young adult literature, participants are apt to learn a number of lessons not expected. I’ve seen friendships formed, bonds created, books discussed, viewpoints defended, issues debated, problems resolved, and teamwork at its best. And to think, all because of books!
I’m glad Betty and I resolved to have that little “friendly competition” those four years ago. It’s become something much greater than us, and I see it on the faces of our “Battlers” before, during, and after each competition. That something is an enthusiasm for reading…the joy of it, the pleasure of it, and the lifelong embracing of it. What more could I ask for?
