Holidays !!

Hey hey hey!!

Something that you might not know about me, although I’ve mentioned it before, is that I lived in Thailand for two years!

I remember a few holidays that we celebrated there, specifically Songkran and Loi Krathong. I won’t go into the details of Songkran since this post is about Loi Krathong, but I can give the important parts.

Songkran is the Thai national New Year. It lasts for three days, but it extends to five. It’s essentially just a really long water fight. Its purpose was to wipe away the bad memories by constantly getting soaked. People would walk around with water balloons, water guns, and umbrellas. The official dates are April 13th through April 15th, so don’t go to crowded places in nice clothes on those days.

Now, about the actual topic – Loi Krathong. Loi Krathong’s date is never set as it takes place on the evening of the full moon of the twelfth month of the traditional Thai lunar calendar.

Loi Krathong is also about getting rid of bad vibes, but instead of getting soaked, you float a lantern. Now, I know you may be thinking, “oh, lanterns, like in “Tangled”?” Well, guess what? That’s wrong! Floating lanterns in the sky are actually for Yi Peng. They’re on the same date, just in different areas. Yi Peng is mainly in northern Thailand, whereas Loi Krathong is celebrated all over. Loi Krathong is when you float the lanterns on the water.

The Loi Krathong boats/floats tend to be made out of bamboo, at least, that’s what mine was made out of. You would decorate your boat with leaves, flowers, literally anything you want. Loi Krathong is definitely the most beautiful holiday I’ve ever witnessed.

I just love learning about other cultures’ holidays, so please share !
