quiz team oomm

Melody decides to tryout for the quiz team because she is very smart. Melody had to overcome many difficulties, like how people think she doesn’t know anything including the teacher that gave her the test! Mrs V helps her study all night. Melody also stayed over extra because she really wants to be on the quiz team. She wants to prove people wrong because they all think that she is dumb and got lucky so she is dedicated to be on the team.

friendship oomm

The inclusion program has changed Melody’s school by her interaction with normal kids.  A good part of the program was that she was able to make new friends and she was able to learn a lot more. The part of the bad the program is that Melody is now exposed to other kids in school that aren’t used to seeing other students with special needs. There are the bullies in Melody’s class that make fun of her.  Melody’s deep, unrealized need for a friend is that she finally has someone to talk to and do activities with. A true friend to me is someone who I can trust and won’t be fake. Another trait I look for in a friend is honest and being straight up. Having a friendship is really important. It is important because you need to have someone to talk to about your problems and to hang out.

We just finish do a non-verbal communication activity and it was hard. There was 3 different scenarios and we chose the on where we had to give a tour. We had to make the scenario without talking and we had to use our talking board the we made which made it very difficult. THe purpose of that was to show us how Melody communicated and it was hard.

The words I chose were basic like thank you, hello, here, my name, what, this. I chose these this words because that’s the word I use every day. The word I could have added were hi or are because it would have made it easier for me and my partner to talk. Also I wish I added yes or no because I always use those words every day and it would have helped

My experience with the board was okay. I did a little frustrated because my partner didn’t understand me. I got to experience how some kids feel when they cant talk and it’s hard. Engaging in a non verbal conversation is hard and I will feel frustrated all the time if i had to use the board and if people didn’t understand me.

This activity did change the way I view Melody. I understand her struggles a lot more now. This will impact the way I see it because her struggles are extremely hard and i wish that to no one. I will always feel bad for her and be able to feel the pain she feels, but I will never feel as much as she does.

out of my mind 5-7

In the beginning of chapter 5 Melody was talking about how she would see what all the normal girls did and that she couldn’t do any of those things. I was surprised she liked the teachers and students in her class. In chapter 6 I was surprised that Mrs.V had been Motivating her to roll over to get her toy. I was happy that Mrs.V made her a new board to communicate with a lot of verbs and adjectives and nouns. One thing that surprised me is that she is able to move her thumbs. Mrs.V had taught her so many important skills and she knows Melody can do a lot of things. Chapter 7 was really interesting. If I was learning my ABC’s in February I’d be frustrated too. Melody’s mom did the right thing by confronting the teacher. I’m happy that she broke that CD, even better the teacher quit so that’s a good thing for the class.

out of my mind chapters 1-4

I think it captures the reader’s attention because it talks about a strong topic. It shows that words have an impact on everyone even if they are different or have a disability. They could predict that the reader has trouble talking but she is able to understand other things, and has photelic memory. Melody is able to listen and learn but she has no way of communicating. Her disability  makes it so that she can’t speak and move she is always in a wheelchair. She’s smart and understands a lot but she can’t tell anyone what she’s thinking. I think that the narrator is having difficulties about not being able to speak and talk to people. She thinks that the doctors think she’s retarded so then she acts like she’s retarded even though she isn’t . She wants to communicate and tell people how she is feeling but she knows there is no way she is able to communicate with anyone.
