From investigating medical murder cases to interviewing world-renowned doctors, seniors Jaashvi Chandagari and Ann George delve into the vast world of healthcare on their podcast, “Medics on the Mic.”
Chandagari recently joined me for a conversation about the journey of their podcast. She recalls that while “Medics on the Mic” was initially an educational venture for her and George, it soon became evident that their podcast had a greater purpose: inspiring their audience to take action.
“Just the fact that the episodes are being posted about serious healthcare issues helps raise awareness,” said Chandagari. “And at the end of each episode, I like to highlight a charity that works to solve that problem, so that our listeners are aware of ways they can help out.”
She also acknowledges the current shortage of healthcare workers, aiming to break the stigma behind the long schooling process. “We try to show our audience that it’s worth it,” she said.
Their podcasting journey starts off with an idea, whether it be an interview, a conversation with friends, or a presentation on research.
“After we schedule an interview, we don’t prepare questions ahead of time. We like to make it up as we go, keeping it authentic.”
She confesses that the longest part of their process is the editing.
“In the beginning, I used to edit everything out, like ‘ums’ and ‘likes. But then I realized a podcast is supposed to be a genuine conversation.”
One of Chandagari’s most memorable moments of “Medics on the Mic” is a conversation she had with a mother whose child is diagnosed with congenital heart disease (CHD). CHD is a rare, chronic heart defect where patients must undergo many surgeries for survival. This can be traumatic for a young child, but Chandagari was in awe of the mother’s unwavering optimism throughout her child’s CHD experience.
