Nyctophilia

When I was younger,

I was terrified of the dark.

Afraid of the claws ready to grab and pull me under,

To snatch me away like a baby from its cradle.

I liked to have the lights awake,

To ward off the monsters sleeping in the dark.

In reality,

I hadn’t seen what a bliss the dark was.

Even if the monsters lurked in it,

I couldn’t see them, didn’t know they were there.

Now I see demons walking across the street,

Monsters pouring from their mouths,

Ghosts on faces and words,

And a monster in myself.

Now, I like to have the lights dead,

So I can hide in the oblivious darkness,

Under the cover of a naive night.

If I can’t see them,

They don’t exist.

Ah, what wonderful innocence.
