The novel Endangered is about a girl named Sophie who flies from Miami, Florida, where she lives with her dad to go visit her mom in Congo, Africa. On her way to her mother’s Bonobo sanctuary, she encounters a homeless man with what looks like an abused bonobo. She buys the bonobo from the man and takes it home to her mom’s sanctuary. Later on, she names it Otto. During Sophie’s visit in Congo, a war has begun and her mom has already left to go deliver a couple of bonobo’s to an island. People from other countries came to take over Congo and were killing everybody.  Sophie went through very hard times trying to keep Otto and herself alive while trying to find help. This novel was definitely very hard to put down and I would recommend everyone to read it. I rate this book 4.6/5 stars because while it was a very intriguing novel, there were some parts that the author stretched out.

My book club book went very well for my group because we all read the book and shared really good questions. I liked how we got to choose our groups because I work better with my friends. I would change the amount of times we meet for book club to only one meeting because it is a lot easier to handle. For everyone to be held accountable I think we should continue doing blog posts because if someone didn’t read the right amount of pages, then it’s obvious since they are writing about stuff they don’t know and their writing will not sound confident.

Book Club Meeting #2

Today in book club, we discussed what we read. One of the best questions that was asked and lead to an interesting discussion was where do you think the bonobos will go? I said that the bonobos will follow Sophie all the way to where her mom is at. I was surprised Sarah said that Sophie should leave Otto behind and go back to Miami safely because they said  Sophie couldn’t transport the bonobo since it would be illegal. I wondered whether Sophie would be able to get to safety before the Rwanda soldiers find her and Otto. Everybody had a chance to share their 2 questions, but next time we should elaborate more on our questions.

Book Club Meeting #1

The book I’m reading is Endangered by Eliot Schrefer. In this book, Sophie, who is a teen, goes to visit her mom in Congo, where her mom owns a sanctuary dedicated to bonobos, a type of ape species. While on her way to her mother’s sanctuary, Sophie sees a bonobo with a poor villager and the bonobo looks like it has been abused. She pays to take away the bonobo from the man and he rides his bike away from the dirt road. She decided to name it Otto. While there for the summer, her mom has to leave to deliver bonobos to a safe, designated place where the bonobos can live peacefully because they are an endangered species. Sophie’s mom leaves about a week before Sophie has to go home to Miami, where she lives with her dad. Right after Sophie’s mom leaves, war has begun in Congo. Soldiers from Rwanda, a country next to Congo, came over to take over the Democratic Republic of the Congo. They shot the president and started burning down villages and killing people. Sophie is stuck in Congo, and can’t get home because the capital has been taken by the Rwanda and so has the airport, so she can’t leave Congo and she wants to take Otto with her, away from Congo. One of my questions was how does Sophie escape the Rwanda soldiers that have come to the sanctuary? My second question was how will Sophie contact her parents when there is no cell service because the Rwanda soldiers cut it?
