Hello all. This poem is a bit darker than most. As most of you know, I suffer from depression and anxiety. I use art as a way to express that and my frustration with how I feel. I want to leave this poem up for interpretation but I will give some context for those of you who would like it. This poem was written during school when my depression hit me very hard. I couldn’t think, I couldn’t focus, all I felt was defeat and depression. So I tried to put it into words, and this is the product of that. Hope you all enjoy.
Float
Defeat and lethargy take hold.
They welcome me back softly,
Like jumping into a pool,
My body bobbing slowly.
The water covers me completely,
In my ears and eyes and mouth,
Lapping, rolling, smothering,
My aches they seem to dowse.
Then the drum beats sound
And I am pulled astray,
My shadow wading, fading, shaking,
The drumbeats hammer in my form.
Every now and then are glimpses
Of a world so far from here,
My eyes so flooded now look up —
and a shimmering appears.
However when I look and ponder
On the light now shining yonder,
It ripples out of sight.
This has really nice imagery. I like it.
Very cool poem. It’s next to impossible to pace a poem correctly but you do it very well
This is so well written Eleanor! You have such specific word choice, and it really creates an image and feeling in my mind. Kind of like water on shore, ebbing back and forth.
Thank you so much!
This is a gorgeous poem! I love it, but i wish you were happier.
lol me too
