Being that the past couple days have been full of rain and chill, I think we should take a look at some pensive or melancholy writing. The feeling of walking outside with rain pitter-pattering on the top of your head as the chill in the air is just cold enough to make your cheeks sharp and your nose burn is one of the best in the world. It is a contemplative time when the skies are grey, which is neither good nor bad, it just is. I love to write poetry and since this is my first official post, I decided to share some of my work. Inspired by the past days and Coleridge’s iconic Rime of the Ancient Mariner this poem is called Rime in Rain.

But quickly before I share it I would first like to share my drink of choice for this poem. A cup of Irish tea with sugar. Irish tea is quite potent and a very particular flavor. Prepare the tea normally except add the sugar in the mug before the water is poured. This will caramelize the sugar and provide a richer flavor.  You can add milk, however the milk dilutes the beautiful intense flavors of the warm sugar and the tea. Now, with tea in hand, enjoy Rime in Rain.

Step, step, step, step.

Water hugs my feet as they step through the road.

Ripples slowly fading into nothing,

still.

Falling into people, cars, and cats, not caring what it hits.

Wonder. I wonder why.

It covers all, it swallows all into its vastness,

but why?

Falling on the mailman rushing past,

Wailing on the feline, now aghast,

Fills the sails and mast,

Oh Albatross! Why doom us thus?

You know our state and rank!

In this mist and cloud, and mast and shroud please hear our bootless cries.

I hope you enjoyed the first of many poems, and have a day filled with soul.

To return soon,

Eleanor

  1. What I love most about this poem (other than the vivid imagery) is the rhyme scheme, or should I say, RIME scheme. The rhyming near the very end of the poem coupled with short lines really brings out an almost chaotic energy. This is absolutely splendid!

    1. Thank you! If you enjoyed this maybe later I can show people how to do things like it!
