Promising Freedom Boys Soccer Season Ends Abruptly

A season that started with state championship aspirations for the Freedom Boys Soccer Team has come to a disappointing end.

Beginning the year, a mix of new editions and developing keystone players raised expectations for the team. Forwards Andre Rubio and Christian Norem joined the squad to bolster an already firing front line of scoring record holder Andrew Strait and winger Nathan Mitchell, whose speed troubled opposing defenses throughout the 2019 season.

Moving into midfield, assist leader Paul Jasper marshaled a midfield of newer players such as first-time player Ekrem Kaya and returner Sam Eastman. In defense, the strong partnership of Cole Edwards and Andrew Weatherly in the middle and Jack Sirmenis in goal would make it difficult for even strong teams to score.

In the preseason, the team came away with two wins in two games, playing with a fast-paced offense that coach Adam Baumgardner and assistant coach Eugene Asamoah have implemented over the past few years, making use of the pace and skill of the strong team they developed.

Moving into the year, the team was projected best in the district, with Cole Edwards being named the best defender in the district before the first kickoff began.

Unfortunately, all spring sports in the state were canceled abruptly as a result of the coronavirus epidemic, and with much of the starting lineup graduating, the school will never know just how far the best team in school history could have gotten in the state tournament.

The team will begin next season with a new coach and a squad of talented players looking to avenge the disappointment of the 2020 season in order to build a team rivaling the strength of the one seen briefly this spring.
