Coronavirus Precautions Interfere with Spring Sports

The Virginia High School Sports League (VHSL) is looking into options for athletes to continue staying in shape and competing for the 2020 season.

On Thursday, March 12, Loudoun County Public Schools (LCPS) announced the closure of all the schools and school related activities on campus in order to help prevent the spread of COVID-19. While many students were concerned about how they would learn, or turn in missing assignments, another concern arose: What happens to the VHSL spring sports for the rest of the season?

Since that Thursday, Virginia Governor Ralph Northam has called a state of emergency for the state and ordered all schools to close for at least two weeks. This also means the closure of all school facilities including fields, the track, and the weight room.

Many sports coaches have already turned to alternative methods for keeping their athletes in shape during this break. The Track & Field coaches have posted workouts for each individual athlete, reminding every runner via Google Classroom that their current goal is to “at a minimum, maintain the fitness you have currently.”

Many athletes are practicing social distancing, especially those with compromised immune systems or family members who are at a higher risk of infection.

Still, many athletes, especially seniors in their final high school season, are doing everything in their power to be able to compete and play once games and meets are allowed again.

On Twitter, VHSL posted an announcement saying “Due to the spread of the coronavirus, we have delayed the start of the spring sports season until March 30. The outdoor track championships, tennis championships and VHSL Spring Jubilee are not affected by this delay,” leading many to continue training in hopes that their season is not cut short.
