Worth Your Time: Aquaman vs Into the Spiderverse

Two movies have been released this winter season as the new blockbusters for not only december but for the beginning weeks for January. I was fortunate enough to watch both movies without any expectations. They’re both good movies in their own respective ways, but hopefully this review will help you decide which one to watch.

Starting off with Aquaman, it was a pretty good movie. It follows Aquaman, played by Jason Momoa, going back to reclaim Atlantis before his evil step brother wrecks havoc on land. Pretty standard stuff for a movie about a supernatural character. Regardless, watching the movie, it felt a little bland. It had some nice scenes in it, but the overall feeling of the film felt like every other generic movie. Not only that, but sometimes the effects used underwater looked muddy and sometimes completely blurred. But overall, a nice watch if you really want to go out of your way to see it. 7/10 for me.

Now whenever someone sees an animated cartoon, they automatically assume it’s for kids. Even though Into the Spiderverse has the target audience of children, it’s still an amazing watch. Art and comicbook fanatics would be able to fall in love with the stylised 3D effects that look as if someone drew all the scenes. Spiderman fans will also be able to enjoy small little easter eggs and details found in the movie relating to other films. Not only that, but the story of an up and coming hero in the midst of pure chaos is an interesting concept. Surprisingly dark for a kids movie but with an inspiring message that everyone can be a hero, I give this movie a 9/10 since characters like Noir and Peni Parker would be better with more development. Not only that but some scenes in the movie can cause eye strain do to the strobing effects.

Now, I think Spiderman; Into the Spider Verse is more worth your time. It’s an amazing movie and not bad for a company that made The Emoji Movie.

December Favs!

Being that Christmas/ my birthday is right around the corner, I decided that it would be fun to talk about 5 of my favourite items this month! This is in no particular order and has no category whatsoever.

  1.  Long Sleeve shirts! Long sleeves are usually always in season, but i’m confident to say that this time of year is when they’re really prevalent. I love the ones with a design on the front pocket and a huge one on the back. I usually buy them oversized so I can wear a heating long sleeve on the bottom. They’re very thin but keep you very warm, perfect to go out in without having to wear a thick jacket and you don’t have to worry about being to hot.
  2. Fuzzy socks! Ah yes, the staple to every basic girl. I love these socks since they’re basically versatile for everything.  You can wear them with sneakers, boots, running shoes, booties, moccasins, slides, they’re perfect to everything. Plus, they’re very nice to pair with a bland ish outfit you wish had an extra touch to spice it up.
  3. Eucerin Cream of dry skin! The colder it gets, the more cracked your skin gets. This leads to skin flaking and irritation, something that no one wants. I used this cream all the time, especially after washing my hands. The school soap isn’t very soothing and the water is so cold that my hands feel deads. After using it for a week now, I can say that I feel and see a different.
  4. Magic Mane 10 in 1 Primer! Something I also notice is that my hair looks and feels a lot duller than it usually does. Sometimes I want the summer shine that I used to have. This is possible with this hair primer that is not only a nourishing oil, but a heat protectant that cuts the hair drying time significantly. It’s perfect for someone who doesn’t want to blow 50 dollars on a small bottle of oil and someone looking for a cheap alternative.
  5. Lofi music! It’s no surprise that i’m a fan of the lowkey beats. I love listening to the long playlists when I do homework or just need to chill out. No one song is the same and it’s great to hear the distinct beats and noises certain musicians use. Not only that, but it’s so satisfying to drown out the world and just focus on the beats. It’s my favourite genre of music by far and I recommended it for people who can’t sit still when it’s dead quiet.

My Dream Job and Why

So this week instead of doing the usual, i’m going to speak about something more personal, my dream job! Ever since i was little, my family and I loved the idea of my future career as a doctor. My whole life my family, especially my grandparents, have pushed me to become a doctor or a lawyer. Considering that their in their native country, Guatemala, there’s not as many opportunities as a student as there are here, I understood why they pushed this on me. But through my life, i’ve gone through phases. From doctor, lawyer, dancer, artist, hairdresser, and video game designer, i’ve found a job i’m really interested to! Surprisingly or not, i want to become a Physical Therapist in Pediatrics.

In April-May of 2018, I hyperextended my leg during a pep rally performance which caused mini rips in my tendons. I went to the clinic where my aunt worked and got it checked out. They said that I would be out of dance and had to go to physical therapy. At first I was super bummed. Physical therapy seemed weird to me since i’ve never had to go. But once I got there, something clicked. I liked the atmosphere there, the way they  helped me, and how they would help others with more serious injuries get their mobility back. Around the same time, I found an Instagram mom named Christina who had a child with Cerebral Palsy. Her daughter, Finley, has been making the journey to gain as much mobility as possible. In the videos you could see the physical therapist helping her out. I decided to give her a follow.

From that day, i’ve been suggested dozens of accounts on my feed of children trying to regain or achieve mobility like Finley. I also watched documentaries on top of documentaries of children with special conditions achieving all these feats. I absolutely loved how accomplished they looked after going down a flight of stairs or even just walking on a straight line. Not only that, but hearing the parents talk about how proud they are and how they want the best for them warmed my heart.

Physical therapy seems like the best fit for me. It’s everything I could ask for. I would be able to help people on the daily, my pay would be good, I would be giving life changing help to kids, and it’s just a specialised version of something i’ve always wanted to be. How my dream career would go is that I work as a PT in pediatrics for a while, then work as a PT for military veterans. Even though it will take a lot of work, i’m willing to put in my all so I can do my dream job and help people.

Zepeto and the Tracking Allegations

With 10 million users and counting, it’s no surprise that Zepeto is growing massively in size. It’s a social media platform where you design a 3D model after yourself and find friends. It seemingly blowed up overnight even though it was used by the fans of k-pop. The company behind this app, Snow Corperation and Naver Corp., have grown in popularity. But sadly in popularity, it ended up causing a massive hoax.

On Twitter over the Thanksgiving break, a rumor spread around about how Zepeto steals your information. In the orignal post they said that it started in a Snapchat group chat and from there spread massively. People then started saying that if you had your volume at 100 and really listened, you could hear static. They also pointed out that in the beginning it asks you for permission to use your camera and doesn’t ask again. Luckily, people debunked this claim by stating that the app never asks you for your location, which is probably makes it way easier to track someone. Not only that but the company, Snow Corporation, is known for making filters for your phone, not stealing identities. Naver Corp., the parent company and one of the biggest search engines in South Korea, hasn’t released a statement talking about the allegations.

Personally, I find this whole situation reminiscing of the scandal a few years ago of the app Talking Angelica where people claimed to be stealing information and recording kids. This also happened with Pokemon Go when it was released and people said it would track you. I’ve been using the app for 4 days now and it seems completely safe, only complaint is the lagginess brought in by the fact that there’s so many people using the app now. I don’t see a problem with the app and I doubt there will be one.

TheSunVanished Story and Thoughts

April 30th, 2018, a Twitter account going as TheSunVanished tweeting a singular word.

Help.

Ever since that day, the account has been blowing up with followers and mentions as people try and decode what they’re trying to say and where they are. The whole premise is that there’s some cities in the United States where the sun has completely disappeared. The owner of the account was saying that they could hear tornado sirens in the next county over yet the skies were clear. In a video uploaded to the account, CNN is playing on a very small screen as the reporter says that there’s violent riots happening in Chicago, New York, Los Angeles, Dallas, and Washington DC. Later they say that there’s nothing in the sky and people are going insane. They take videos outside and you can see flashing lights and a pitch black sky, weird since the videos were uploaded at around 5pm and the sun should be out regardless of what time of the year it is. From here on forward, they keep hearing strange noises, seeing weird people, and even finding friends in the same position as them. They even took a picture of a strange triangular spacecraft in the sky and found someone experiencing the same thing in, get this, Virginia.

If that’s not offsetting and absolutely weird I have no clue what is.

So far since then they have met up with one of their friends and they started driving away from that area. There they had an argument and were split up. Now they are all alone in the woods and also got a video of what it sounds like a plane crashing. Since then, there’s been no update.

This Alternate Reality Game (ARG) is a popular one made by an 18 year old named Aiden Elliott. He’s a filmmaker from Tennessee trying to find new ways to say stories. He says he is responsible for all the accounts, pictures, and videos on all the accounts in that reality. He calls his story an Interactive Story and not so much an ARG, saying “ARG is kind of a flawed label in my opinion.” He’s extremely humble with his work and very excited to see how it goes. He’s hoping to have a Netflix show on it since it started off as a movie concept. (All info came from @funwrita on Instagram and Twitter)

Personally, I love ARGs. They are very interesting and are very new ways to tell stories while using social media as its medium. The whole conspiracy theory aspect of them are extremely entertaining as well and usually written very well. The puzzle aspect is also a lot of fun when decoding. I’m excited to see where this story goes and would love to see a movie based on it.

Dominion Homecoming

No offense but,

what?

Now don’t get me wrong, Dominion is way better then Seneca is. But with the way that they’re treating homecoming makes me have flashbacks of the famous Beach Blast. Homecoming is as ‘American public school’ as you can get, it’s a staple in everyone’s high school experiences. From the fun and good songs, friends, and partying, it’s obvious that people like going. Or at least used to.

My friends have been uploading instagram polls on their stories for days asking who will go with the answers almost always clicking no. I asked my classmates why they weren’t going and a huge part of it is that the DJ sucks and the fact that it gets boring. Now considering that i’m a sophmore, I obviously went to the dance my freshman year. I considered it a lot of fun but not because of the dance itself, but the people who went there. The songs were mediocre at best and some just downright bad, but we stuck it out the whole night. The next morning when I checked my phone, people were complaining about how the songs were bad and the movie moment everyone wanted, the slow dance, didn’t even happen. I feel like the DJ was told “Hey, we need you to play 2000’s throwbacks and a couple cringy hits. Oh yeah, no slow songs because we need to make sure they leave room for Jesus.” Now this is the main reason why no sophmores want to go and hey, I don’t blame them. I don’t listen to Silentos “Now Watch Me Whip” when I want to listen to quality music. Plus, I know some people went with their sweethearts wanting to squeeze one slow dance but ended up getting Gangnam Style instead. Not to mention that there was nowhere to sit. If you wanted a short break you had to get your 50 dollar dress dirty and sit on the floor. It would’ve been great if they added chairs considering we have a huge abundance of them. Don’t even get me started on the tarp that made people’s feet turn pitch black and now.  I appreciate the SCA trying their hardest to make the turnout high by even adding games, but this problems are with the admins. They should be more lenient. The turn out won’t be high because of the games and food (though it’ll help a little), the turnout will be high if they let us have some freedom, at least for night. We are constantly under extreme pressure and expectations and wait for one night to just let loose and fun. Now? We’d rather stay home and do homework then go to the staple events of the year.

That being said, have a good rest of your week and if i don’t show up to school, the admins kicked me out because of this post.

An Explanation

High school is the worst. You have no time for anything, have to do everything, and then blamed for doing nothing. Not only that, but having friends is hard. You either have no classes with them or you’re too busy to talk to them. Personally, I fall under this category. All my friends are so busy we rarely talk, which leave me with a lot of things to talk about. From pop culture, drama, movies, and dance, this blog is gonna become a place where I can spit out all my thoughts on current things happening. Even though it would have been a better idea to pick one topic, I realised I would have a lot more freedom having just a commentary blog.
