My History in Journalism

Discovering that journalism was my passion was an idea that I discovered around June of last year, but was something that I have been interested in and pursing for about three and a half years now. While it may have taken me a long time to discover this passion, it is something that I would enjoy doing for the rest of my life.

I began this journey in 7th grade when I mentioned a interest in journalism to my English teacher at the time, who was the newspaper sponsor at the school. Although it took me until Spring of that year to join the newspaper staff, I quickly fell in love with it.

I was an after school club and their were meeting once a week, while it wasn’t as much in my life as it is now, just that little amount let me discover that this was something that I wanted to continue. I started writing articles on the baseball, because I have been a big baseball fan for as long as I can remember. I wrote several articles about my favorite baseball team, the Washington Nationals. Combining something that I loved into this new interest really increased my interest in journalism and I began to write outside of the time we had after school.

My 8th grade year I began to write more articles that effected the whole school and had a news story feel or even a feature rather than an editorial. That year I also conducted my first interview where I interviewed the communications teacher at my school, about the lack of lockers we had at school. This year we would also have the first print version of the newspaper.

While it was a small staff with little exposure and outside knowledge of our existence, it had a ton of fun working on it and it was a real confidence booster!

My Freshman year of High School I enrolled into a Intro into Journalism class. While we were not technically apart of the Newspaper Staff, I did have a couple articles posted that year. By the end of the year I realized that I had found my passion, once discovering this I began to continue my podcast over the summer.

The next year I joined the Newspaper Staff, and so far I have written 12 articles, and four podcasts about the Nationals called Nats Talk.

Things That I Will Be Posting

On this blog I will be exploring the possibilities of my passion outside of the paper at school. I will also be giving advice about what you should include in different types of journalism, (editorials, features, podcasts, news stories, ect.) all of this tips should help you continue the quality of your content.

While I am obviously in no way a professional and expert about this. I am just very passionate about journalism and I am using this platform to be able to share my passion with others, including tips that I have learned as a young journalist that I find helpful!
