A-Z: All About Me

Hey, it’s Esme! Today I will be doing an A-Z All About Me post.

A- I’m obsessed with earning all A’s in school. My older sister got all A’s all the way from elementary through high school and always brags to me when I complain about how hard school is, but then she got a C in Chemistry in college.

B- I love books. My favorite genre is either greek mythology, realistic fiction, or action.

C- I’m allergic to cats, but I think they’re so cute! I used to always beg my mom to get me one, but she would never give in. Maybe because she and I are allergic?

D- I used to have the best dog in the world, Navie. We recently had to give her away because we’re moving very far and we think she’d be extremely stressed on the flight and living in a high-rise in the middle of a city, but I still miss her terribly.

E- My name (Esme) comes from a J. D. Salinger short story that my parents loved, To Esme with Love and Squalor. Before they had kids, they promised themselves they’d name one of their children after the girl from the story.

F- My family moves every two years because of my dad’s job, so I have to make new friends every time we move.

G- My older sister is named Gracie. She is six years older than I am, which was fun when she could babysit me but not so fun now that she’s away at college.

H- I love learning about history, so I will talk to anyone who knows a lot about it, like my dad. Not my mom.

I- I lived in Indonesia for three years, which is rainy and full of mosquitos.

J- I used to live in Jordan when I was very young, and attended an Arab preschool.

K- My family visited Australia where we got to feed kangaroos and hold koalas.

L- My oldest sister is named Lillie. She is funny and great with languages, like Arabic and Italian.

M- I’ve only lived in Muslim countries, but we are soon moving to the Philippines, which is Catholic.

N- My neighbor here in Virginia is the best. She cooks great food, tells hilarious jokes, and always tells me I’m her favorite.

O- I was born in Muscat, Oman, and for the first few months my mom lied to her Omani friend and pretended my name was Asma and that I was named after her.

P- My dad has been working in Pakistan for the past year. Next, we are all moving together to the Philippines.

Q- My cousin Jacquelin makes quilts for 4-H Club and also raises lambs. She is very hard working and the sweetest person ever.

R- The rain in Southeast Asia sounds like it’s going to wreck your house, shaking the windows with thunder and filling the yard outside with floodwater.

S- I was diagnosed with scoliosis in the fifth grade, and I wear a brace every night to bed. I should wear it more hours during the day, but it’s just so hot.

T- My cousin Theo is in medical school and studies spinal defects. Since I have scoliosis, I’m sure he will help me at some point.

U- Since we are moving back to Southeast Asia and will experience three more years of rainy seasons, I better get an umbrella.

V- After we move to Manila, our first trip will be to Vietnam.

W- I will definitely miss Winter when I move to the Philippines. Apparently, their only season is the rainy season, and the rest of the year is super hot.

X- When I was in fourth grade, I dislocated my elbow. The doctor thought he fixed it by jamming it back together, until the next doctor we went to took an x-ray. Somehow, I had gone an entire summer with a dislocated elbow

Y- As a little kid just learning how to spell, I couldn’t understand why the word WHY wasn’t spelled with just a Y.

Z- When we lived in Chicago, my dad would ask if I wanted a zeppole on Saturday mornings. I learned that’s another word for Italian filled doughnut, so I always said yes!

  1. Hey Esme,
It’s Anna Claire again! I love your A-Z blog post and all the things you put in it. That’s so cool that you get to move to new places every two years, but I bet it’s hard to have to move and make new friends. My dad also works in the State Department, but luckily he doesn’t really have to travel as much as he used to. I’m going to be so sad when you move again :(. Your blog looks great! Keep up the good work!
    Sincerely,
    Anna Claire

  2. Hello–and goodbye, Esme-

I’m not in school today, your last day at River Bend, and I think I might’ve cried had I been. I’m selfishly sad that you’re leaving, because you are truly a burst of sunshine both in English and Communications. I’m so glad I had the opportunity to get to know you a little and see all that talent, intellect, and kindness roaring out of you. You added something special to every class you attended. We’ll all miss you…but most especially your classmates in Communications.

I wish you all the best in your travels abroad. My son Bryan loved Vietnam, which you mentioned as one of your family’s first travel destinations from the Philippines. He raved about the people, the landscape, and the food. He studied abroad for a semester in Singapore and traveled all over Asia since flights were so cheap. He even earned his scuba diving certification…maybe that’s something you’ll do!

We encourage you to keep blogging…the Student Blogging Challenge starts soon. Worst case, you can participate in the weekly assignments through this link: https://studentchallenge.edublogs.org/ I’ll keep your blog attached to my teacher blog through the end of the year. If for some reason you lose access, you can always open another through Edublogs, which is also a WordPress site. It would feel and look the same!

Safe travels, Esme. I thoroughly enjoyed your post…and you! Stop by and say hello if you’re ever back in Northern Virginia. We’ll miss you!

    Cheers,
    Mrs. Rombach
