All About Esme

  1. Hi, I’m Esme, and for the time being I live in Northern Virginia. I love to learn, swim, and hang out with my friends. I’m your basic, every-day middle schooler, except for the fact that I move every couple years.
  2. I have scoliosis, and have been diagnosed for two years, which basically means I’ve worn a Boston Brace for that amount of time. I was super scared to wear it to school at first and bought a lot of big sweatshirts to cover it up. The first day wearing my brace, I just figured, “Oh, well. Everyone has something they’re dealing with. Scoliosis is just my thing.” From that moment on, I wore my brace on the outside of my clothes. A few girls I know are scared to wear their brace because they don’t want other kids to make fun of them, but I asked, “Would they make fun of you if you were wearing a cast? You’re just fixing a messed up bone!”
  3. I have moved eight, almost nine times. I was born in Oman, and then we moved to Jordan when I was two. We lived in Virginia, then Indonesia, Chicago, and back to Virginia a few more times. My favorite home was in Jakarta. I hated to leave. We are supposed to be moving to Manila in a few weeks for three years, and I am very excited about that. We will live in a high-rise on the 16th floor. I hope I’m not afraid of heights.
  4. I’ve gone to so many different kinds of schools. I went to an Arabic school in Jordan, then an Australian school in Indonesia. My Chicago school thought I was gifted, so they put me in a really fun writing class. My Williamsburg school thought I loved performing, so they put me on the improv team that performed in contests and in front of the school. They were wrong, but I did it anyway.
  5. I love to swim, and have since I was four years old. I never really get tired in the water. I’m looking forward to joining the swim team in Manila. One time in Jakarta, a giant lizard jumped in the pool during practice. I have never swam so fast in my entire life.
  6. I’m the youngest of three sisters. My older sisters are about to turn 21 and 20, and they’re both at Virginia Tech. We are all named after flowers: Lillie Kate, Gracie Rose, and Esme Dahlia. Whenever my dad buys flowers for my mom, he makes the bouquets a blend of all of our flowers.
  7. I’m really interested in learning languages. Right now, I take Latin which is a dead language but also really helpful when trying to learn other words in English. I’ve learned more about English from my Latin teacher than I’ve ever learned in English class! I used to take Arabic, studied Bahasa Indonesia, and I’m hoping to learn Mandarin at my next school.
  8. Since we are moving to the Philippines, we had to find a new family for my dog. It’s a long flight and a long quarantine period, and most dogs either die or suffer a lot. We didn’t want that for her and luckily we found a nice family with little kids who wanted to play with her all the time. I’m so happy for her, even though I’m really sad to be without her.
  9. I’m not sure what I want to be when I’m older. I think I’d like to be a reporter, but I’m also interested in medicine. My favorite reporters are Lisa Ling, the late Anthony Bourdain, and Kamau Bell.
  10. My family on both my parents’ sides are from Chicago, the home of the Bears, White Sox, Blackhawks, and Barack Obama. My family says Midwest is Best all the time, and I believe that, too.
  11. My favorite books lately are Circe and The Great Alone. One was quiet and beautiful, and the other one was scary and frustrating. Now I have no idea what to read. I even asked the people who work at Barnes and Noble, but I hated all of their suggestions.

  1. Hi Esme-

Thanks for such excellent elaboration on your first official blog post. It was a pleasure to read all about you; now I’m doubly depressed that you’re departing the States. However, I know you’re going to thrive in the Philippines…and how lucky you are to see the world!

I hope you’ll continue to blog with us from your new home–if that’s something you’re interested in doing. Your blog will stay active all year, and you can participate in the Edublogs Blogging Challenge from anywhere. That starts in October.

Here’s to a couple more weeks-

  2. Hi, Esme!

I am a commenter for Student Blogging Challenge.

By the time I was your age, I had also moved nine times! I was born in Norway. Then we moved to New York City, two different houses in Miami, back to New York City, then to two different neighborhoods in New Orleans, then back to New York City in two different neighborhoods. My dad moved a lot because of his jobs. Why do you move so much?
