Enrique’s Journey: The Story of a Boy’s Dangerous Odyssey to Reunite with His Mother by Sonia Nazario

Enrique's Journey: The Story of a Boy's Dangerous Odyssey to Reunite with His MotherI have mixed feelings about this book.  I thought I would love it but I did not.  The story is heart wrenching and it was a hard book to put down as I was dying to know how Enrique’s story ended.  However, I did not like Sonia Nazario’s writing style at times I found boring.  She writes from more of a reporter journalist perspective so it is hard to get a true feeling of what Enrique felt and experienced. However, I do think this a book everyone should read as it is eye opening into what immigrants from Central America have to go through to get to this country.

Enrique’s Journey is the story of how he traveled from Honduras to the US to be reunite with his mother who left him for a better life in the US when he was five.  He is too poor to afford a smuggler, so he travels the way the poorest of poor travel on the “Train of Death.”  The dangers are real and devastating to read about: hunger, gangs, rapes, exhaustion, robberies, murders, amputations, excoriation, and on and on.   You will have to read the book to find out if he was successful in his journey and how his story ends.
